Costs and expenses

Italian Castle located in the South of Italy

Tuition fees are waived at the host university but you will be required to maintain your student contribution or international student fees at UWA.

If you are currently in receipt of Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance you may continue to receive payments. An application for Austudy and Youth Allowance should be accompanied by certification from the University, which can be obtained from the International Centre.

Students participating in the student exchange program will be expected to pay for their own:

  • Accommodation and daily living expenses including books.
  • Travel expenses - STA Travel is the official travel agency for the Student Exchange Program. If you are booking with them make sure you tell them that you are participant in the program so that they can offer you the full range of benefits available to students participating in the program.
  • Passport and visa costs.
  • Any additional insurance cover. The University has extended its Corporate Personal Accident and Travel Policy to cover all UWA students while overseas on a recognised exchange program. However, this policy is not accepted by some of our overseas exchange partners and it may be necessary for you to take additional health cover at the host institution. If you are planning to travel more than 60 days in total or more than 15 per cent of total period of exchange you will have to arrange alternative travel and health insurance coverage.
  • Any other incidental costs.

Financial aid for students on exchange may be available through a variety of scholarships or loans.

Working while on exchange

There are limited working opportunities for casual work during your period abroad. You should not rely on this to support yourself during your exchange period.  We'll provide you with more information during a pre-departure seminar which we hold for you before you leave.

Accommodation

All host universities within the student exchange program have a range of on-campus and off-campus housing options. Most students who have been on exchange have chosen to stay on campus, as it is a convenient option.

Details on accommodation options should be available on the websites of the host universities or from the Study Abroad office.

On-campus accommodation is difficult to secure at some universities.  You should consider this when selecting your preferred destination. If you are unwilling to live off-campus in shared living arrangements, you should consider another destination.
