All overseas study through the Student Exchange program must be for credit.
You must gain approval from your UWA Faculty for all units undertaken overseas. Your initial selection of units will be made at the time of application. However, this may change due for a number of reasons including:
- changing your preferred study location
- units at you host university may have changed
- units at your host university may not be available
- units originally approved may not be suitable.
Whatever the reason, each time you make changes to your unit enrolment overseas you must gain approval from your UWA Faculty.
How do I gain credit?
There are several different ways you can gain credit. Credit may be for a core requirement, for a range of options, or for an elective unit. When choosing your units you need to consider the following:
- Core credit - select units which are similar in content to the UWA unit you are required to do
- Credit for options - you need to select units which are similar to units within the range of given options
- Credit for electives - this type of credit offers you the most flexibility as you can choose any unit, subject to Faculty rules and the unit rules.
How do I select units?
Whilst on exchange you will need to do the Accepted Full Load required at the Host University. This is not the same as a 'full time load' at UWA, and varies depending on the contact hours, assessment method and workload required at each individual university. To determine the Accepted Full Load required at each of our partner universities please check out the Accepted Full Load document .
There are also several search options which can help you with selecting units.
- Have a look at the host university website to see which units are available.
- Explore hardcopies of the handbooks of individual universities which are kept in the Student Exchange Library at the Study Abroad Office in Hackett Hall.
- Search OUTWARD, a unit equivalency database which allows you to search for units that have recently been completed by UWA students on the program and/or approved by UWA for credit transfer. Please be aware that the list of units featured on OUTWARD is not fully comprehensive - it is just a snap shot of some of the units students have completed whilst on exchange. Also, please note that using OUTWARD does not replace specific advice received from your Academic Adviser.
If approval for the unit you have selected has not yet been established, you must submit a detailed unit description with your Faculty Approval Form as part of the application process.
