Life at UWA

Studying at UWA is a whole-of-campus experience.

There are more than 12,000 students and 2,500 staff, as well as cafés, libraries, sporting facilities, galleries and shops, the Crawley campus is more like a small town than a school.

University will probably be quite different to your educational experience so far, so we've compiled a brief introduction to life at UWA.

Recreation

The many student-run clubs and societies will add fun and friendship to your UWA experience. Involvement with a club can provide much-needed relief from the demands of study.

UWA has a proud sporting tradition, and there are many sporting groups. UWA Sports co-ordinates many of the activities, as well as providing a highly-regarded Recreation Centre on campus.

Student Support

Student support

At school the support network (class teachers, careers advisers, year co-ordinators, psychologists and chaplains) is fairly obvious, but at University it can appear a little hidden. Rest assured that there are many people on campus whose job is to help you if you're having difficulties - or even if you just don't know where your next lecture is!

Student Services is specifically aimed at supporting students through their studies in all sorts of ways. The Student Guild also provides advice, help and support, as well as other services and activities.

The University's School of Indigenous Studies administers a number of access programs and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Facilities

The University library - the largest academic library in Western Australia - is one of UWA's most valued resources, with more than a million volumes and online access to extensive digital resources. This resource will prove invaluable to you in many areas: understanding course materials, preparing essays, assignments and tutorials, and studying for examinations.

The library's collection is found at a number of locations, both on and off campus. Each location caters for different areas of study. The library is linked by computer to university libraries and databases throughout the world.

Computer facilities are provided through the various faculties and schools, and all students of the University are eligible to open a free e-mail account. There is a wireless network available to use your home laptops and you can apply for dial-up access to the University network.

Travel and accommodation

With parking at a premium on campus, it is recommended that students use public transport, walk or cycle to the University. UWA offers assistance to students in finding accommodation near the University as well.

Food

The Student Guild coordinates most of the food outlets at UWA. You can get a quick coffee, or a reasonably-priced meal. There are various vending machines at a number of points on campus.
